'Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment’(

Ballyfinane NS embraces this principle. We have already been very successful in attaining three Green flags for our school( Litter & Waste, Energy and Water).

We have just started working on the theme of 'Travel'. We are hoping to reduce the amount of emissions used by all the families in our school by walking, cycling, carpooling or taking the school bus to school. We have lots of ideas for the next two years, details of which are in our Action Plan on our school notice board. We are trying to encourage as many families as possible to walk to school on Wednesdays (WOW) during this term. (Sept to Dec 2015)

We have regular Green School meetings to inform parents and discuss ideas and progress to date.

Our 2015/2016 Committee Members: Chairperson - Laura Corbett, Secretary – Frances O' Connor , P.R.O. –  Jack Teahan & Declan O' Connor

The school community are members of the committee and are very committed to achieving our Green Flag in 2017.

For the past two years, we worked on 'Water'. We are very proud to have achieved the Green Flag for this theme in term 3 of 2015.

With water charges imminent in the near future, we are conscious of the amount of water we are using as a school community and have endeavored to reduce our usage using simple methods such as:

  • installing 'Hippo Bags' in all the cisterns of our toilets
  • harvesting rainwater by installing a water butt outside the school
  • following the school's 'turn it off' campaign

We will continue with previous themes, Litter & Waste, Energy and Water, whilst aiming for our 4th flag, Travel during 2015/2016/2017.
